Persona Poem–Mary L.

Taking Up Arms

You call us pestilence,
greedy monsters,
but we just crave attention.
No man among us,
we court you in foreign ways.

We sing to you
but you don’t find it so pleasing;
you cover your ears and wince.
Perhaps our voices do not make
the same sweet notes.

You call us thieves,
lawless heathens,
but we do not steal.
We like to think of it as
redistributing wealth.

We may keep a thing or two
for ourselves.
No hands to make, just wings
to beat a path in the sky
and claws to take.

Now your rifles are pointed.
Did you know our weakest spot
is you?
You take your aim
and shout

Harpies, fire!
Do our wings repulse you?
Does our nakedness offend?
Here, is this pocket watch
enough to make amends?

  • This was intersting. I liked how we usually see vermin in such a negative light but this poem deconstructs that idea. It is a little ambiguous as to whether or not you had a specific animal in mind or if it is just meant to be rodents in general.

  • Good poem,I really like your descriptions and your word choice. I’m not really sure who it’s about though; when you talked about how their song hurt their enemies ears I thought of the Sirens, but then you talked about redistributing wealth I thought of Robin Hood, and then later when you talked later about how they were naked I thought of the Amazons. I’m probably just not familiar with your topic, though. Maybe you could make it clear in the title?

  • I love how the poem is ambiguous enough to still have me guessing throughout the poem what vermin you’re writing in point of view from. (I feel dumb now, but I never actually figured it out fully…)
I really got an interesting and new perspective!

  • Very creative! I especially like the last stanza! I feel like there’s a lot of punctuation, which in some ways seems a bit distracting
